This is a good example of the humor that appears in this strip now and then. Wally will then explain to her that Chic has snuck out for reasons unknown and then she’ll calm down. Or worry herself sick wondering where Chic is and why he snuck out.
I know it’s just for story purposes so that presumably all the kids can be rescued from whatever danger they’re walking into [again], but why did Kirbee bring Chic a glass of water after 1 AM if he wasn’t awake and asking for one? One of the rules of parenting: if a child is asleep, let the child sleep!
She could have been thinking about his questions about haints and thought he might be awake worrying about them and so used the glass of water to give her a chance to talk to him about them and reassure him? Maybe? Sometimes a mother’s reaction is… unexplainable. React first, then engage logic.
Kirbee seems to be incapable of deceit, and doesn’t recognize when she’s been lied to(snipe hunts; the 2 guys tricking her into going to look for a body). The concept that “her little boy” would deceive her might not seem possible to Kirbee. And considering what we’ve seen her live through…who can say what might be possible in Kirbee’s mind?

You called him nugget once too often… I mean your diet used to be eggs, eggs eggs. It could make a battered kid a little nervous, …

Blame it on the haints. Don’t fret. The dittos will come to the rescue. Wally is next to be awakened Kirbee style.

Stranger things have happened. There was once a door that was a jar.

Would a mutant born a chicken like to be called “Nugget?”

Very understandable. The cry of a distraught mother.

There is an interesting hint in panel 2 of an eye and mouth on a pillow.

Not “Chic has mutated”; or “Nugget has mutated”; but My little boy…she absolutely loves Chic.
