I have a large colony in a tree beside the house. There’s always a guard bee on patrol, ready to attack anything he doesn’t like. So far, I know he doesn’t like: car washing under his tree, red, orange or yellow clothing, things that vibrate, like mowers, and me.

Guard bees, like all other workers, are “she”, not “he”. Their brothers, the drones, do little besides flying out trying to “get lucky”. Male bees (drones) are like teenage rock-star wanna-bees…they are living at Mom’s place, and their sisters feed and groom them. Then they all get evicted by their sisters in the autumn. Beekeepers like to joke that drones’ skanky behavior is because they did not have positive male role models (all drones come from unfertilized eggs). Thanks for thanking the bees! Pesticides are making things difficult for them, killing them outright and making them more susceptible to varroa mites.
