As a Venezuelan-American, I can tell you Maduro is every bit the monster that people say he is. Juan Guiado is right to make his stand, and at this point Venezuelans can no longer afford to be picky about what international support they get. There NEEDS TO BE NEW ELECTIONS.
But I also worry about Trump and HIS motives, which are not quite aligned with those of human rights and democracy. For him this is a vanity project, not a matter of life or death as it is for the Venezuelan people. He’s also made it all too clear in the past that his help doesn’t come free or cheap. That’s worrisome, because Venezuela is a train wreck and it will take years and billions of dollars of investment to put it right again. Trump won’t even give money to Puerto Rico, which is IN THE UNITED STATES. I want to see Maduro gone, but I don’t want to see him replaced with a U.S.-aligned government picked by Elliot Abrams that is just as incompetent and corrupt.
^ The only thing that will save Venezuela is if the USA goes in there with guns blazing, killing bunches of peasants, installing a puppet fascist dictator, taking control of all public property and selling it to American businesses, and taking over the entire economy to make profits for American investors. It’s always worked before.
I must have missed the memo explaining just why the heck we have ANY BUSINESS interfering in the internal affairs of Venezuela. If we’re not willing to “help” the people of Central America who are being ‘crushed under corrupt criminal regimes being run by drug gangs and worse, then why are we thinking of interfering with Venezuela … oh… world’s largest oil reserves.. of course.. how stupid of me… sorry.
