I hear ya. My son that is 37 has in his wallet a drivers license and two cards. He never carries cash. I carry cards that I seldom need and a few bucks that I seldom spend. I guess I could do the same as him. I’m just not very fond looking at the visa bill and bank statement. But they do tell me where my money goes. Shocking I tell you!

Sometimes I get a funny look when the bill is $17.27 and I hand them a $20 bill and two pennies. “Just do it,” I tell them and they are amazed that I get three quarters with the change.

I am contemplating moving more to just cash. However the twits at Visa and MasterCard have made some trials lately where they pay the stores to not take cash and only accept plastic. Why? Because people spend more when using plastic, which means that their fees for processing the transactions increase.
I would suspect that it wasn’t the person paying cash that caused the delay; it was the cashier who didn’t know how to ring up a cash sale or make change from doing so.
This story works only if you’re late for a minute. If you need an excuse for being late more than 5 minutes, you better say “Sorry I’m late… I got stuck about a guy whose phone batteries where empty and who had forgotten the code of his credit card.” Sounds much more convincing.
Until some years ago, I would have asked “who goes shopping directly before an important meeting anyway”, but actually I have to ask “who does still meet in conference rooms to discuss something?” I’m participating in conferences about ten times a week, and as everybody else, except for the weekly standup, I do it by Webex. And if I cannot make it to sit in my office in time, I’m participating by using my private mobile from anyplace. Webex does run on the mobile, and it works fine (better with earphones, though. Mostly I’m sitting in the metro then and it might be loud there).

Do we still have enforceable laws against monopolies? This sounds what Al Kelly is aiming for.
If he gets his way, how will we tip waiters & waitresses?
