Well, our current President says that he is a genius. Perhaps someone can enlighten me with a comparison analysis that shows how Trump measures up, or down in comparison to Mrs Hoover.
Thanks Brian, definitely worth reading about Lou Hoover (‘Hoo Loo’). I loved that she would speak Mandarin to her husband in the White House when she didn’t want others to know what they were saying.
The thing about Herbert Hoover is that he was amazing at organizing — relief efforts in particular.
Before the US entered WW1, he led efforts to get food to Belgium, transported on US shipping. And it happened without the Germans stealing from the relief effort. (You have to remember that the British were keeping food from coming into Germany.)
During WW1, he organized the US distribution of food within the US and to troops.
After WW1, he led a relief effort in Europe. He also led a relief effort in the Soviet Union.
In 1927, the huge Mississippi River floods saw him again organizing the relief effort, while Coolidge took the summer off in the Black Hills. (No joke, Coolidge actually spent a couple of months there).
And yet…
His political beliefs and philosophy led him to fail at what could (and should) have been his greatest effort. For this he is and will continue to be reviled by the American public.
Truman had Hoover investigate the post-war reconstruction of Germany and Austria.
I just read a reference to the Hoovers’ translation of De Re Metallica this morning in a book about New Mexico history. Earlier I had read some contemporary editorial columns by H.L. Mencken; in the early 1920s, apparently, he was held in suspicion for being too much of an Anglophile. Mencken also claimed in a column written when FDR got elected that Hoover should have been the right man for handling a brief economic crisis, but the Depression turned out not to be brief.

Just want to say two things: Yesterday was the happy 120th wedding anniversary to the Hoovers and also that Lou Henry Hoover was a genius.

Nice homage to her work with the Girl Scouts.
