Apparently, this is the theme of the day amongst the conservative cartoonists. Good to see the propaganda machine is chugging along.

Is Capitalism working for you Mr. Ramirez? Congratulations! Is not working for everyone! There’s abuse of power no matter the system. No one is against Capitalism, people try different measures out of desperation because the system is just not working for everybody! I can see how the privilege few freake out trying new ideas because ‘they have a lot to loose,’ but that is no reason to make foolish comparisons!

Interesting Republican political strategy. First make “socialism” a dirty word; then blame Venezuelan corrupt dictatorship regime on socialism; then link the Democratic party to Venezuela. I wonder if they think the electorate is that gullible? They do, of course, ignore the more comparable successful social democratic models such as found in the European Nordic countries.

Impoverishment of the elderly because of medical expenses was a common and often accepted occurrence. Opponents of the Medicare program that saved the elderly from that cruel fate called it “socialized medicine.” Remember that slander if there’s a sustained revival of silly red-baiting today.

Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, Collective Bargaining were all demonized as un-American socialist plots

We regularly used and consumed foods, drugs, chemicals and other things that were legal, promoted and actively harmful. Hazardous wastes were dumped on empty plots in the dead of night. There were few if any restrictions on industrial emissions. We had only the barest scientific knowledge of the long-term consequences of any of this.

Holding businesses accountable for the terrible things they did to people in the name of profits and placing safety regulations were demonized as more un-American socialist plots

And there was a great stain on America, in the form of our legacy of racial discrimination. There were good people of all colors who banded together, risking and even losing their lives to erase the legal and other barriers that held Americans down. In their time they were often demonized and targeted, much like other vulnerable men and women today. • John D. Dingell

Striving to uphold the Declaration & Constitution’s ideals that we are all equal and have the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness was [and still is] demonized as yet more un-American socialist plots

    continued…

When all the money and power is centralized in a very few people and the general population is left to suffer, I am not sure Socialism is the correct word to call it.

Capitalism failed in 1929. WE now have a hybrid system.

For all those who persist in thinking of “socialism” as a dirty word: You probably practice it every day. A family of four with one breadwinner sits down to dinner and shares the food….even allowing the largest portion to go to the 6 foot teenager to eat the most, (according to his need) even though he’s not the breadwinner. We lend our hose to our neighbor when his is not quite long enough to reach his thirsty rose bush. W donate to charity even though it’s not deductible any more. We help old ladies cross the street when they’re not fast enough or strong enough to make it across before the light changes. We drive on streets built at community expense. When we were in kindergarten, we learned that as “sharing”. How come it didn’t stick?

Maduro isn’t leftist enough to run as a democrat nominee.

Two opinions, Left and Right, for a mixed economy, that is, one with elements both of capitalism and of socialism:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/22/opinion/the-case-for-a-mixed-economy.html

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/20/opinion/centrism-moderate-capitalism-welfare.html

Could the Right cartoonists at least make a slight effort to deal with a complex subject in ways a bit less simple-minded? And if they could at least admit that Maduro is neither socialist nor capitalist but a totalitarian dictator, it would help too.

    The artist’s comment:

Pedro Molina: ‘There is nothing more similar to a far-right fanatic than a far-left fanatic. They even use the same language and excuses, ALL the criticism toward them are “Conspiracies and false news”! Lazy people who have surrendered to the comfort that dogma offers and have abandoned a critical spirit. A dictator is a SOB regardless of whether he kills and represses with his right or left arm. The only fight worth fighting is the one for freedom, equality and in defense of ALL human rights of the people. The rest is sheep pasture.’

Venezuela claims to be socialist, but it is not. Does it provide healthcare for all its citizens? No. Does it provide free college? No. Does it do anything to help its own citizens? No. Maduro is a right-wing autocrat, because Leftists believe in the people democratically. Maduro hoards all of the wealth for himself and his generals, and the Right-wing is about destroying democracy and giving all power to as little people as possible.

What’s going on in Venezuela is hardly " socialism" by any of the many definitions of that term. You know the old joke about how it’s wrong to claim that Christianity is a failure—because nobody has actually tried it? But the Scandinavian countries do have (one type) of Socialism, and it seems to work quite well for them. Britain has cut its social safety net to ribbons (in the name of “austerity”, which happened to be the exactly wrong cure for the disease). We’ll see how well their looming “capitalist” experiment goes. Some predict a dystopia in which most people can barely afford food or medicine, while a tiny minority do quite well. 1920 anyone?
