We need more centrist billionaires who made their fortune selling overpriced bad coffee to tell us how things like single-payer health care and the Green New Deal are impractical. It brings to mind Bugs saying “Sheesh, what a maroon!” as the Tasmanian Devil spins over the cliff. In a weird ironic twist, it’s the billionaires and millionaires throwing the rest of us under the bus while deriding us for wanting to improve our lives.
We’re pretty close to this already. The “modern” GOP is well into John Birch Society territory — which was declared by William F. Buckley to be beyond the pale, back in the day — and we have a “president” who sympathizes with the Nazis, whose father was a leader in the KKK, and who kept a book of Hitler’s speeches by his bed.
Meanwhile, a tame FDR New Dealer like Bernie Sanders — a social democrat, not even a full-on socialist — is seen as a wild-eyed radical instead of the centrist he used to be.
We HAVE no real left-wing in this country’s government. Not at all. Even Ocasio-Cortez is suggesting things that were DONE in the 1950s and 1960s, or were proposed by Teddy Roosevelt in the 1900s.
If Americans were better educated on the political spectra – because there isn’t just left-to-right, either – and if we didn’t have a two-party government, we might have more diversity of perspective. Right now we primarily have middle, right, far right, and crazy right represented in the national government.
The idea that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is somehow a radical for proposing a tax plan LESS severe than held true throughout the 1950s and 1960s is simply hilarious.
If the Nazi’s had won the war we’d have a cure for cancer, permanent bases on the moon, and free gigabit network access for all. Oh, and ‘Happy Worker’ (forced labor) camps to ensure employment for all even if you aren’t white.
Yes, it probably would be like that because human nature is a constant no matter how society changes. This comic, like so many others, is basically Rall saying that people suck. If we look beyond the fact that Rall is also a person, what is the point to his thinking?
Rall, in his typical “ad absurdum” way, stipulates people would be fine living under fascism. Doesn’t that totally ignore of the history of people who lived under authoritarian rule and fought against it, sometimes even changing it. Doesn’t it denigrate the memory of people who died fighting for change. Much as he would like to believe every else are just sheep, except for him, it just isn’t true.
In his typical over the head way of doing things he shows where the ones who want to change things do not want to change the core of the system, just make it nicer, kinder and gentler instead of wiping it out and cleaning things up.
Sorta cute. I guess there is a point here. Ted is saying, essentially, “plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.”… and there’s always a case for that. Not sure where it gets us tho.
You could have drawn the cartoon using how things in East Germany really were 50 years ago. I’m not sure I’d be convince of your point by that either though. Politics will never be perfect and we really do need to make the steps that we can not live in fantasy.
