Trail racing sounds like what we called “cross-country” running in high school.

There is (or was) a form of motorcycle racing – Trials racing. The route was through woods, across creeks, and over downed logs via narrow, twisted paths. The motorcycles were much like motocross, but much lighter and with as much ground clearance as could be built in. The race was timed, but there were various penalties, like going off the trail or putting your foot on the ground (a ‘dab’). And no big flying whoop-de-doos. Yes there were judges at each ‘trick’ – it took a while to find out who won. I’ve seen some TV coverage of the races (skill shows)…. 8^)

Or, put another way, there’s a fine line between in the zone and in the weeds, and you can only see it once you’ve crossed it.
