Years ago some researcher did a survey of the best cities to live in, and Philly came in embarrassingly low. It turned out that the city never answered the researcher’s survey and he just entered zeroes for everything. But also, Philly had an abnormally high death rate. It seems that because there are so many leading hospitals in Philly, people come from all over the country to die in Philly! (It’s a great city. Really.)
Sickle Cell is an inherited condition, a recessive trait that you need both parents to have just to have a 25% chance of being born with it. As a bonus if you have the trait but not the condition you’re resistant to malaria, which is a HUGE boost for people that live in tropical regions where there are a lot of mosquitos. Technically the easiest way to prevent it is to screen potential parents to make sure they don’t have the trait, but then that’s getting dangerously close to selective breeding which we don’t want for SO MANY reasons.
They are using internet as we all do for years. It’s the 21th century, remember? No need to pay much money and invest two days of travel to come together physically, stay in hotels etc.
Background story: Since we are using Webex in our company, efficiency rose drastically. No need to book a conference room, to set up video conferences, to walk to such room… simply click on “start” when the message comes up on your computer and you even see the names of the participants, you can show all others any electronic document or image, you can talk, you can show a video of yourself(provided you got a camera at your screen) and if somebody speaks, it’s even indicated at their name. I’ve been partidipating twice in such a conference when being late and still sitting in the metro, using my smartphone because, yes, there’s an app for Webex available for Android and iOS. And I’ve been working in an international scientific project between 2000 and 2003 with people who were spread all over the world, most of them living in Europe, one living in NYC and one living in a city in Siberia, by using a messenger, a website and eMail. From some, I didn’t even know the place where they live.
