If I can have my corned beef and cabbage in the form of a Reuben, I don’t care what Saint they name the day after.

But speaking of snake harassers, many years ago, late 1960s, my parents moved us into a house with a sizable backyard, which they used for a vegetable garden. All our cats were able to roam freely during the day, and unfortunately, that meant some fatalities among the local wildlife. I particularly remember them bringing back little garter snakes, harmless things, probably actually useful, but try telling a cat not to attack an animated piece of string.

In 1982 we were stationed in Germany. We went on a 10 day trip to England, Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland we were chatting with some locals and I asked if St Patricks Day was a big deal there. He said “no, that’s just a day you Yanks use as an excuse to get drunk and drink green beer.” :D

I don’t know what got St. Patrick so worked up. The snakes in Ireland would have been the same as those in England: adders (mildly venomous) and grass snakes and smooth snakes, both of which are as harmless as the proverbial aardvark. He’d probably have had fits if he’d met the snakes we’ve got in Australia.

(The saying is “Aardvark never hurt anybody”.)

As a kid I kept a baby alligator for a few months. I had to catch live food for it, so I’d take a dip net down to a local stream. Well, in all honesty, it was more a roadside ditch. Anyway, I’d catch minnows to feed the ’gator.

My dog, Tyke, always followed me on these food gathering expeditions. One time, he was barking as if alarmed, following something through the reeds next to the water. When I finally got a look at it, I saw it was a large, fat cottonmouth moccasin… one of the few deadly snakes in the USA.

My fearless twelve year old self scooped it up in my dip net… and was horrified to see it strike through the fabric of the net and squirt venom from its fangs. In the end, I killed it with a large rock, justifying it in my own mind because there was a church kids’ playground just a few yards away. Also, kids walking home from a nearby elementary school often walked along that side of the road. Still, I felt bad about it.

Today, I’d probably try to relocate it.

St. Catty’s Day, just brilliant! I love it! As my hubby has a pet ball python and feels that these beautiful, placid creatures are very much understood, he really enjoyed reading this strip. I’d love panel three in a poster. I’d love to hear Pucky say again, “Feed me, I’m Scottish!” :D I’ve really missed you all so! Hubby and I just got back from our holiday in North Yorkshire where there was pretty much zero internet access.. I can’t really say that was a drawback, although I missed BCN so much. I enjoyed being unplugged for a week. (((((((((((((((((((huge engulfing bear hugs going out to all in the Mega Orb))))))))))))))))))))) @Shaunnmunn: Hubby got your wonderful birthday card yesterday and he was so moved by your drawing of the British bomber Lancaster! You have such a great talent my dear friend. Xxxxxx

Happy Bunday, everyone! I’m looking forward to celebrating St. Catty’s day next week, with corned beef and brussels sprouts (Paul hates cabbage) and smashed potatoes with lots of butter.

My orb friends, I need some advice. We have a local no-kill shelter that is looking for new quarters. I have discussed their dilemma with Paul and am slowly convincing him to adopt another cat. My question is: Is this fair to Yum Yum? She has been an only cat since I was given her almost six years ago. She is very territorial. I don’t want to traumatize her. Should I get another cat and hope she learns to accept it? If so should it be younger or older, and why?

Thank you all so much for any advice you can give me.

Cute but the hereditary witch in me must state that it is totally inaccurate re: snakes and St Patrick…. What he actually did was viciously eliminate all the Druids (whose standard is the snake) from Ireland by forcing Christianity on the people. Either way I’m all for St Catty’s Day :) https://sojo.net/articles/saint-patrick-druids-and-snakes-truth-middle

She might have become associated with mice because she was also associated with souls in purgatory, who were sometimes depicted in art as mice.

Careful, cats. Don’t get too cosy around snakes! Listen to uncle Johnny as he sings ……

On her way to work one morning

Down the path along side the lake

A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake

His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew

“Poor thing,” she cried, “I’ll take you in and I’ll take care of you”

    “Take me in tender woman

Take me in, for heaven’s sake

Take me in, tender woman," sssssighed the snake

She wrapped him all cozy in a comforter of silk

And laid him by her fireside with some honey and some milk

She hurried home from work that night and soon as she arrived

She found that pretty snake she’d taken to had bee revived“Take me in, tender woman

Take me in, for heaven’s sake

Take me in, tender woman," sssssighed the snake

She clutched him to her bosom, “You’re so beautiful,” she cried

“But if I hadn’t brought you in by now you might have died”

She stroked his pretty skin again and kissed and held him tight

Instead of saying thanks, the snake gave her a vicious bite

    “Take me in, tender woman

Take me in, for heaven’s sake

Take me in, tender woman," ssssssighed the snake

“I saved you,” cried the woman

“And you’ve bitten me, but why?

You know your bite is poisonous and now I’m going to die"

“Oh shut up, silly woman,” said the reptile with a grin

“You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in

    “Take me in, tender woman

Take me in, for heaven’s sake

Take me in, tender woman," ssssssighed the snake

    ssssssighed the snake

    ssssssighed the snake

    ssssssighed the snake

    ssssssighed the snake ..!

I tried to follow Sue Ellen’s instructions on finding Lupin Leaps In reviews in Goodreads. There was no “book” icon to be found. All it lets me do is go to my own review. DID ANYONE ELSE GIVE A REVIEW?

About ready to drop my membership. The advice page is super long & doesn’t address reading reviews. What’s the point of this thing if reviews aren’t available to interested readers?

There are four-leaf clovers everywhere. That may be good luck in America, but a shamrock has three leaves. It’s even part of the legend of St. Patrick, that he used the shamrock to demonstrate the tri-partite nature of the Christian god.

(Yes, according to Robin’s rules I’m Canadian, but my Dad was born in Ireland, and this four leaf clover thing has been spreading, and has always bothered my family.)

Looked up St. Gertrude out of curiosity and found there are several. One Gertrude’s day is November 16, but St. Catty’s Day, St. Gertrude is March 17 and only lately so. “Because of her reputation for hospitality, Gertrude was originally the patron saint of travelers and the recently dead (who were seen as making their own form of journey) as well as gardeners and the mentally ill.” I rather take offense to that but then gardeners and cat people are a bit crazy. I have on first hand authority as I am both.Interesting woman, well educated and had enough spunk at a very early age to say No I will not marry the duke, at a time when women, especially young girls had no say. She didn’t marry him, never married, and started her own convent.

That isn’t a snake, it’s a Partnership Collective drone! Tagon’s Toughs have a ruling that allows those drones to be killed for the bounty, to pay an indemnity the Partnership Collective lost! It’s one of the few court decisions that properly treated a clone-hive of attorneys. (His little necktie is even orange!)

I suspect St. Patrick was simply kicking the drones out so there wouldn’t be any collateral damage once the mercenaries start blasting lawyers!
