We really need to rethink a 4-year term of office WITHOUT a probationary period especially for those with narrowly focused experience (e.g business, finance, law, etc) that do not deal in a humane way with society as a whole. We need to make our politicians experience the same thing most of the rest of us do in an “at-will” world … if you don’t do a good job, you will be fired. Politicians should fear us not vice-versa. Running a state is nothing like running a business.
I’ve been reminded a lot lately of an incident back in 5th grade. It was cold in the morning and a couple of the kids were banging on the school door wanting to be let in early. A teacher reminded us the school policy was that kids weren’t let in early unless it was colder than -5 F, and finished by saying “This is Minnesota. You better get used to it.” And I tell ya, he was right. And while I’ve kept that motto with me for all these years, it’s a hell of a lot colder than -5 F outside and I haven’t left the house in 2 days.
