Yikes, my father-in-law used to resort to shop tools for that job too. He really should have seen a podiatrist instead. When nails get that thick, there’s usually a fungal infection under the nails.
You can always look at it this way as well. Ben’s gut is getting in the way and he cannot reach his toes. The long handle on the pruners allows him to reach his toes and is tough enough to cut them.

Come on, Ben! Go get a pedicure. They will remove the dead skin and trim your nails properly. And you really don’t need to let them polish your nails.
