Since Toles is using a very different cartoon to make a point that overlaps with Mike Luckavich’s excellent toon, I’ll modify a similar comment…

The Democrats already DID compromise to give him $1.3 billion for border security of a kind that would actually work.

TRUMP ACCEPTED IT. THEY HAD A DEAL to at least open the departments not involved with border security.. Senate Republicans even passed it UNANIMOUSLY on voice vote. What is there to compromise when both sides agreed to a deal and then ONE PERSON (who had previously agreed) then asks to re-do the deal because, boo hoo, talk show pundits (Limbaugh, Ingraham, Coulter, Fox & friends) called Trump names and crybaby Trump caved to entertainers who hold no government positions.

Offer DACA as a compromise? TPS? Both DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to protect children who were brought by their parents as small children or babies with no say in the matter) and TPS (Temporary Protected Status for refugees from specific countries) were working just fine.

Trump is the one who, on his own, made them into a problem, so Trump alone is the one who could solve those issues by just ENDING THE PROBLEM HE CREATED.

Trump broke the deal. Trump admitted he won’t open the other departments because then he wouldn’t have a hostage. Trump broke DACA. Trump broke TPS. Trump is the one who promised MEXICO would pay for a wall — a big, beautiful 30 foot tall CONCRETE wall and is now holding AMERICANS hostage for HIS LIE.

A wall would cost at least $40-$50 BILLION, not $5.6 billion. So if the Democrats did “compromise,” Trump would likely just BREAK THE DEAL AGAIN and say, “No, I really need $12 billion.” And keep breaking the deal and moving the goal posts. He already proved he can’t be trusted with keeping a deal.

Trump is the one who needs to now demonstrate “good faith.”

First open the parts of the government that don’t involve the wall and then debate border security.

Mick Mulvaney has been working on the impact on government programs if the shutdown continues into March. I’m sure he sees it as an opportunity to cut more services out of the government.

Ann Coulter is a burr to Donnie and she’ll goad him into doing something stupid if it’s the last thing she does.

How much longer will Americans who love their constitutional democratic republic of the people, by the people, and for the people allow authoritarian anti-Americans like Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh et al to spew their foul exclusive propaganda without countering it in full measure exposing them for the traitors they are to American values? We have dazzled other countries when our two parties work as a team but to have a self-defeating division as we do now can only delight enemies/traitors who are all too willing to exploit the inherent weaknesses in a mutually exclusive, masochistic, two opposing party system that stubbornly refuses to change and grow their nation stronger through unity.

Commerce Secretary shrugs at food banks for federal workers, advises them to ‘get a bank loan’.

Wilbur Ross: ‘I Don’t Understand Why’ Federal Workers Are Using Food Banks

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross called the rhetoric surrounding the shutdown “hyperbole,” saying that even if federal workers never get paid, it would have a negligible effect on the GDP.

He also expressed his bemusement that federal workers are being forced to use food banks to feed their families.

“Put it in perspective: you’re talking about 800,000 workers and while I feel sorry for the individuals that have hardship cases, 800,000 workers if they never got their pay— which is not the case, they will eventually get it, but if they never got it—you’re talking about a third of a percent on our GDP so it’s not like it’s a gigantic number overall,” he told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.

When asked about the federal workers forced to use food banks, Ross seemed nonplussed.

“I know they are and I don’t understand why,” Ross said. “Because as I mentioned before, the obligations that they would undertake, say borrowing from a bank or a credit union, are in effect federally guaranteed so the 30 days of pay that some people will be out, there’s no real reason why they shouldn’t be able to get a loan against it.”

What about the people who are not working and will not receive a pay check?

The GOP wants the Democrats to build a stairway to meet them, which will result in exactly nobody getting to move on along the road to the future.
