They didn’t mind their small, colorfully and curiously dressed audience, and we enjoyed the concert. Not long afterward, their record Six Ways from Sunday came out, with the minor hit “13 Seconds to Burn.” It’s a prison song, and the narrator is counting the days: Forty years, ten months, three weeks and four days, twenty hours, six minutes and thirteen seconds to burn.”
I read that Willie Nelson once joked that “If I’d shot my old lady when I first thought about it, I’d be out by now.” If the narrator of 13 Seconds to Burn was true to his timeline, he’d be just over halfway done.
That’s a darn good song to stick in my head like that, in the background, just waiting for the right bit of my own writing to bring it back into the exercise yard to soak up some daylight for a while. Hang in there.
