When I was 9, we moved to a town on the north bank of a river. I always had a sense of “the river is that way,” and came to be known for my sense of direction. We moved away when I was 12, and I’ve been lost ever since. I have practically NO sense of direction.
With low cloud level and one failed engine on his Aero Commander my father was trapped in an Alpine valley. Turn left, turn right, if the guess is wrong it is an explosion and a lot of aircraft wreckage. Genius, my Papa, he looked to see which way the water was flowing in the valley stream. Following the water stream is safety and a strong whisky when he landed. The other way the valley closes down bit by bit and he can’t climb the aircraft or turn round.
There is river in the Canadian prairies ( MB-SK) that is called the Souris river, pronounced soo-re in French, but everyone just call it the soo-riss. Soo-ree is the French word for “mouse”. This river zig zags across the Canada USA border. Every time the Souris river crosses into the USA, it is called the Mouse River. When it crosses back into Canada it is called the Souris river again. And so the zig zag goes!
2) Comic didn’t mention “compass” names like North and South, so I’m not sure how they’re relevant. On the other hand, it also didn’t tell us where he’s trying to get to.
3) On the other hand, the instructions did include “turn lefft”, which could be a problem if he’s dyslexic.
Yep! ‘Used to buy quadrangle maps to find the direction of water flow before canoeing. (I best loved zero pitch, otherwise, I canoed uphill till I got tired, had lunch, then turned around.) I’m a retired scientist and have finally concluded that most water molecules from the clouds end up in some ocean. I cannot divulge more due to my Top Secret Clearance lifetime restrictions.
