I was smiling like Garfield today as I watched a girl yelling into her “smart” watch repeatedly, because it kept getting her text reply wrong. (In fact, she started out talking normally, and with each attempt, her voice got a little louder and more annoyed, kind of like Jon’s did.)
A nice little tribute to the late Lorenzo Music, who (for those unaware) voiced Garfield on “Garfield and Friends” and several other specials for many years.
I tried using the voice activated search feature once . I wanted to find a movie starring Myrna Loy (1930’s actress). Lets just say that I am still waiting for the police to ask why I was trying to find movies about minor boys as that now appears tobe something I searched for.
I will never use voice recognition software for this reason. Besides, I sooooo enjoy screaming into the phone when I get one of those automated menus telling you to press or say “1” for this, “2” for that, in order to route you to the right department……
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. And that is why I go to my contact list, pick the contact I want to call, and call him/her myself.
Based on a true story. Someone I know was having issues calling a number using talk tech. So when he demonstrated, it was him trying to spell out the radio station he was calling. I suggested him trying to say something that sounded like the station’s call letters, and it worked.

This, by the way, is why I don’t bother using voice-recognition software. It never gets anything right!

I wonder how long before voice recognition is as accurate as family or a friend?

I immediately thought of Lorenzo Music who was the voice of Carlton Your Doorman in the old Rhoda sitcom.

I had that problem with Siri constantly mixing up “Call Dad” with “Call Dan”. I solved it by changing “Dan” to “Danny” (a nickname he sometimes uses.)

Voice recognition technology just isn’t where we’d like it to be yet.
