Watchmakers tools were a little different back then.
It keeps time better than plain old “rock”, and doesn’t require as much winding (whatever that is).
It keeps metric time in liters instead of quartz.
Well, I took it for granite…
The thickness of that gnomon, will at least you get close to the apparent solar time.
