But remember that you still need to pay taxes during the shutdown so we can bomb Yemen.

I had a fantasy that I could follow a single dollar of my taxes all the way through the taxation process just to see where it went. Might be interesting. As for this strip, you can’t do that. Your congresspeople need their raises during these trying times.

And the logical next step is to only pay for when the government actually functions…..

There must be a real advantage to an opposing party, uncompromising, deeply partisan political system … it’s just that at times like this it’s hard to remember what that advantage was.

They need that little sign on the wall: “This government has been open for X days”.

As I understand it, not only is much of what the IRS does so extensively automated by IT systems now, but more importantly — as true with many agencies under the Trump administration whose regulatory missions depend heavily on enforcement — is so severely gutted and understaffed these days that tax-cheaters may rest easy in the assurance their misdeeds and fraudulent filings will go undetected for years to come. This surely sounds great to Trump and all his tax-cheating buddies and political patrons, and may indeed have factored into his eagerness for the government shutdown. The first glimmers of a Trump exit strategy, perhaps? After all, historically speaking, this buffoon’s only apparent expertise lay in the art of the con.

All I want is to be able to direct the gov’t to spend my taxes on the things I want to support. (Same for everyone: You can support the incredible military, I’ll put mine toward education…)

I always picture my tax dollars for the year paying for the fuel of a multi billion dollar jet fighter taxiing about 300 yards down the runway.
