Maybe he learned about women and marriage from watching old sitcom reruns, where wives tried to get out of trouble or get something from husbands by uncharacteristic amounts of sweet-talk or flattery (said husbands — sometimes not the sharpest crayons in the box — usually didn’t fall for it, thus generating the laughs). I recall Alice Kramden trying to soften up Ralph in an effort to get him to shell out for a TV set. And Ricky was immediately suspicious of Lucy when she got all lovey-dovey with him; turned out all she wanted to tell him was that they were having a baby. Etc., etc.

What is with the communication in that family? Can’t you just say “Nothing’s wrong! I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you!”?
