I know learning by rote is out of fashion, but people my age can still recite our multiplication and division tables.

I go through this weekly. The kids I teach can recite things from Minecraft and Fortenite but can’t recall the 4 operations used in basic math. Oh well, it keeps me working at least.

Lots of parents do not understand that its about motivation. Seeing their children failing to learn, they say “it’s so difficult! The kids are not old enough for such complicated stuff!” while their children know even more complicated things in their private life. E.g. kids in primary school having to retell a story or learn ten words of a foreign language, and some parents claiming the teacher would ask for too much too fast. While their kid already knows over hundred Pokemon-names by heart with ease, or dinosaurs including their appearance and size, or 100 football players by name including data like their birthdays.
