I thought at first that Mr. Collins might be punning on “cynic”—the word derives from the ancient Greek for “dog-like”—but I looked up the quote, and it’s attributed to Charles W. Tobey, a New Hampshire politician who at various times in the first half of the 20th century was that state’s governor, representative, and senator. So if there’s a pun involved, I can’t figure it out, but I got a couple of history lessons out of the cartoon anyway. I guess that makes this a teachable moment. Nice work!

Wow – if she could talk, 12 years of dog life wouldn’t be enough time for her to explain that!
