Honest to God, when I was in the Air Force I had some one ask me where I was from. When I said “New England”, her response was “Oh, I thought you were an American.”
Not surprised by the New Mexico thing. Many schools are not doing history or geography very well. I also heard of cashier calling in the police because someone paid with a two dollar bill. The Secret Service came because the cashier thought it was forgery.

This mistake was perpetrated by both a D.C. Superior Court clerk AND a supervisor.
This is the quality of the local government of the District of Columbia, which like most other big-city governments in the U.S. is essentially a Democrat monopoly fiefdom.
This example is but one of many that tend to justify excluding D.C. from statehood, if this is their quality of self-governance (see also: RE-electing a convicted felon to mayor!).
Old hat. The number of people who applied to my state agency for a licence who were from New Mexico and landed in the foreign credentials section were legion.

Thankfully its not a state although, I suppose, like half was returned to Virginia the remaining half could be given back to Maryland.
