Where I used to live, in the Rocky Mountains, above 7,000 feet, this wasn’t a problem. Never once did a snowplow block my driveway. Here in the DC area, though, they do. Every time. I talked to a snowplow driver here once about why they do it the way they do, and he said “there’s no other way to do it”. When I tried to explain that there is, he didn’t want to hear it and drove off.
I suppose that arranging some way for the mailbox to break away with minimal harm would be best. Making an impact proof mailbox is tempting, but isn’t there some sort of law that prohibits excessively stout objects close to the road? Excepting telephone poles I suppose.
I hate that every year with snow plows. Doesn’t help that the end of my driveway is on a curve so the end of the driveway tends to get packed in. Which makes it hard to clear out even with a snowblower.
OMG! It’s as though my comment from two days ago was prescient! The driveway and the snowplows and maximum frustration! So often I fought (and of course lost) that battle!

Monty’s right, they always end up filling in your driveway immediately after to clear it. :P . Most annoying.
