I notice that Trump said, and Conway repeated, that Cohen pleaded guilty to something that wasn’t illegal. Stop and think about that. Why would anyone plead guilty to something that isn’t illegal? Would the judge have agreed to sentence Cohen for something that wasn’t illegal? How would that work? What are the sentencing guidelines for something that isn’t illegal? This bizarre claim shows just how desperate Trump and his minions are. Yes, a crime was committed. Cohen admitted he committed a crime. Pecker admitted that he and his organization committed a crime, and he signed an agreement to avoid prosecution. Both Cohen and Pecker have implicated Trump in that crime. We know that there is evidence implicating Trump, because we have heard the tape of the phone call between Cohen and Trump. Very likely there is more evidence. I don’t think that this crime is serious enough to merit impeachment. Others may disagree. But the idea that there was nothing illegal here is a fantasy born of desperation.
