We didn’t have a fireplace either. We did have real beds, more or less, and the heating stove was a nice warm place to gather around. We burned corn cobs in the earliest stove I can remember. Later, my job was to bring in heating oil for the newer stove.

Hope the young’uns have been good. That horizontal stretch of stovepipe isn’t going to survive many lumps of coal.
