My question from yesterday: Why is it called a stogie?
The term stogie is actually named after Conestoga, Pennsylvania where one of the first cigar factories (in Pennsylvania) was built. Now just a generic, slang term that refers to any cigar.
The Lancaster-to-Philadelphia region was renowned for tobacco growing and cigar making. Hundreds of brands were made there at that time, the most popular cigars of which included names like Bayuk Brothers, Henry Clay, Theobold & Oppenheimer, and Topper. The stogie is also derived from the wagon masters who would often smoke long cigars, resembling the spokes of the wagon wheels.
On a side note Conestoga, Pennsylvania was also home to the Conestoga wagon company. They were the 18-wheelers of the day, able to carry 6 tons. Pulled by a team of 4 to 6 horses the wagon did not have a seat up front. The driver would walk along side, ride a rear horse, or sit on the “Lazy Board” located on the left side of the wagon between the wheels. The brake lever was also on the left between the wheels where it gave good purchase when applied with the stronger arm of a right handed person. When another vehicle was passing in the opposite direction the driver would move his wagon to the right side of the road so that he could judge clearance for passing while sitting on the lazy board.
Thus the reason why we drive on the right in America.
How does this guy live with himself? He’s still in my daily paper and presumably being paid though he hasn’t had a new weekday comic in years. I get it if you’re Snoopy but my god, do some work.
