Women, minorities, first Muslim women elected to congress, first indigenous-American gay lesbian elected to congress — Democrats asked for support from marginalized communities and have welcomed those populations into the highest centers of power.
While this wasn’t the Blue Wave some predicted (I didn’t), it is a significant if quiet shift, and I do predict that this bodes well not only for women candidates next cycle but also for progressives. People of color did well even in some key losses (the Georgia gubernatorial election rigging by Kemp was a travesty), and as long as they keep working, keep voting, 2020 will be bluer. Having said that, this election shows what we all knew: this is a deeply divided country, and one election isn’t going to fix that. Maybe nothing can.
This cartoon is so perfect!!! I LOVE seeing women getting involved. I have been very dismayed at some of the most vocal women – who wore Tee shirts saying Grab my P____ Donald Trump, etc. I still cannot get over any woman doing that!! Some of those women have children – what kind of a role model are they for their kids. The women who put Dr. Ford down because they believed Trump, the women who criticized the women’s marches as nothing but BS!! They truly believe that the Republicans see them as equal!! Yeah all of us mealy mouthed women marching for rights, etc. — they asked what are they marching for?? I think most of today’s results answer that question!
Here in Kansas, we are thrilled to have the first Native American member of Congress, Sharice Davids. Sharice served in the military and was also in the Obama White House. The GOP tried to show Sharice as scary since she does kickboxing and other martial arts. Actually, she looked pretty badass up there on the tv screen. People forget that there is a physical aspect of being in the military. It isn’t strictly a desk job. I was actually for her opponent in the primary, Brent Welder. Brent was super smart and another person who worked in the Obama White House. There are lots of exciting Democrats to choose from around here and elsewhere.
I hope the Democrats never give up on offering great candidates like Gillum, O’Rourke and Abrams. I heard a commentator say that considering they were such high quality candidates, their losses just means that the south is still the south. I don’t think that is fair. They came very close to winning. There are other states which are also very red and certainly are not southern. States like Wyoming, the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, etc. No one ever called those states southern and they are very red. Change takes time.

Effects of Electoral College (and the system of representation it’s modeled on): Republicans control the US Senate, where each state gets equal weight (2 senators apiece). Democrats control the US House of Representatives, where each person gets equal weight (more or less).
So compare blue California to red Wyoming. Population 39,776,830 : 573,720 or about 69:1. Representatives 53:1 (but only because Wyoming’s entitled to the minimum of 1). Senators 2:2.
Effects of gerrymandering: Where I live in Wisconsin, America’s most gerrymandered state, Democrats won most statewide races about 50:48 last night (except incumbent Dem. Sen. Tammy Baldwin beat ALEC stooge Leah Vukmir 55:45). But Republican-controlled redistricting after the 2010 census resulted in Republicans controlling the state assembly 64-35 and the state senate 19-14 (58:42).
Sessions was let go. Not sure what that will mean in the future. I wonder if when trump gets sent to the pokey if he will still have secret service protection?
I am thrilled that more women are in government but scared they will be sucked in, chewed up and turned into more off the creatures that already inhabit our government.
My hopes for turning this House district blue turned out not to be. I guess I shouldn’t have believed my source. It’s a shame too as the Democrat was a lady and would have added to the total of women in the House. OTOH, the other guy has narrowly won the last two races here after his predecessors usually won handily. Maybe this guy won’t be there for twenty years like they were.

Fingers crossed for some other Democratic candidates, still in very tight races, votes still being counted. Looking at you, Arizona and Georgia.

First Female Governor ever in South Dakota! Oh wait, that one doesn’t count as anything special since she is the wrong label.

Since she’s awake, she can see that that the alt.right controls the Senate, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court.
Now what will she do?

Brian Kemp won in Georgia. Kris Kobach lost in Kansas. Lesson learned by Republicans? Cheating bigger and bolder is what works!

One woman who is awake may not agree with another woman who’s also awake.
If women only saw things one way, it would not matter at all what we men thought.
