Interestingly, there are luxury watch rental companies – so you can wear the perfect timepiece for a fancy event without having to pay for such an enormously expensive item.
I recall a law suit that made the news several years back about a group of 4 ladies who pooled their funds to purchase a Rolex watch, with a contract to “timeshare” it. It seemed that one of them lost her job causing the others to be short of funds to make the payments and the watch got repoed by the jewelers, so the other 3 tried to sue the fourth lady for breach of contract to get their money back. The judge said it was their own fault for financing something they knew they couldn’t afford and threw the case out of court.
