Nope, this cartoon isn’t directly on point… Obliquely, one might argue that working with the Russians to safely dispose of their remnants might keep them from falling into the hands of those with ill intentions I suppose.

It might not prevent it but at least it is a beginning. The endless war on terrorism doesn’t seem to be working…..

There ARE more threats in the world than terrorism, you know. Just because the Cold War is over doesn’t mean we can just stop bothering to keep track of Russia’s nukes.

Treaties . They’re only as good as the paper they’re written on .

… or something like that .

The treaty allows us to inspect Russian nuclear facilities. That’s by far the best place for terrorists to get nuclear material.

No one opposes this treaty for any valid reason, and all of the actual adults (Democrat and Republican) desperately want it to pass. It’s purely a case of immature Republican senators doing their best to get America to fail, with the hope that it makes Obama look bad.

The “R” is for REDUCTION, which IS only a “start”. The U.S. has also had our own “problem” with the “misplacement” of significant nuclear materials. Any effort to get control of these materials is a step forward.(Especially as it is THE U.S. that has looked to providing “mini” nuclear power plants to our “friends”.)

The only reason nuclear terrorism is still a a problem is not because of the lack of a START treaty. It is because our politicians still haven’t figured out that when it comes to nations like Iran and North Korea no good comes out of continuing to talk when the time to talk has passed. Additionally, no good comes out of relying on the weak-kneed United Nations to do anything meaningful to help the situation. They have long ago proven themselves to be a building full of empty suits. The bottom line is that it would be a mistake for this treaty to be ratified. It has practically no teeth as far as Russia is concerned and further strips our defenses. Considering Russia’s actions it blows my mind that we’re willing to be more trusting of them rather than less trusting.
