Any savings we’d get out of this would just go to his cronies, certainly not to any deserving project that old Boorish Epshteyn blathered about.

Is there any vital friendship Trump won’t destroy, any friend he won’t betray, any nation he loves? Oh, right, Russia.

The self-anointed “king of the world” expects all his subject nations to submit and pay tributes?

I hate to admit it, but the Dump is right for a change. Most NATO countries are under paying, They use NATO as their main military force so they only need to have a national guard unit. If they get attacked, say from Russia, the US will come to their defense. The Dump order looks somewhat different.

Though, Dump would get further if he used the correct numbers when addressing the world leaders. Russia provides 15% of Germany’s energy through gas, not 55%.

In the signed agreements, European counties still have 7 years to get their payments up to the 2%GNP amount, most are right on schedule, but Trump figures everyone is like him and trying to stiff someone.

What PLANET are you living on, Ariail? ALL members of NATO contribute differing amounts. They don’t owe us anything. Remember, if war breaks out THEY GET HIT. NATO is for OUR benefit, and every president previously has understood this. See John Kerry’s comment on this.

Did you ever hear that story about the young Putin in the KGB had his first assignment in Paris and he hung out with the hippies and played Hendrix on his guitar.

Ariall’s op-ed shows a complete lack of understanding about NATO and our role in the partnership we have with them.

This is an insult to NATO and the sacrifices that their soldiers have made on our behalf. NATO troops are highly professional and will take most of the damage if we ever did have to fight the Russians. God bless them all.

We get MUCH more for our investment in NATO than mere money. We get power. Which means we have a responsibility to them.

    Shame on Trump.

Remember that the Mutual Protection clause has been invoked once by US. We called them for help! Europeans fought and Died for fighting our enemy.I was a US soldier that rubbed elbows with the Poles and Brits among others in Iraq. Now somehow they are considered “Slaves to our adversaries”?To the Relatives, of the European dead. The parents and the children of honorable men and women who fought to honor their nations allegiances and treaties and defend themselves from our common enemy I want to say he does not speak for us. The cost of defense is in both blood and treasure. Your blood has gone un-noticed by the one who shall remain nameless but not to those who served.

So what is NATO? The world sees it as a living expression of the liberal democratic values and principles forged out of the bloody nightmare of the Second World War. People around the world who are receiving the impacts of NATO don’t just benefit from the security elements of it, but benefit from this story it is telling — that democracies matter and that our values and principles matter. NATO countries are good models of how to support citizens, how to create strong governance, with freedom, with security, with all of the benefits of liberal democracies. NATO’s responsibility is not to enhance, or exaggerate, or profit from those anxieties arising form authoritarian regimes but to allay those fears, to tell people, ’Look, we have faced down massive challenges as a world in the past and we did it by coming together and standing side by side for what we knew was right. We can again and we need to again." But Trump the real estate developer made it clear that he sees NATO as an exclusive club where “delinquent” members have been freeloading at the expense of American taxpayers for decades and that NATO is no more than merely the sum of its tanks and jets. Now give us money.
