The Christians had the idea when Lent came up. Eat all the fat, milk, and meat before all that fasting started (no refrigerators back then, remember), and there’d be less temptation in the house. It’s why the day before it starts is Fat Tuesday.
The best place to fight temptation is the spot where you would turn into the cookie aisle.
