Yea, omQ R, you kinda caught yourself at the end. This cartoonist is from Holland, not Africa. Africa just is a football country so naturally it will post a view on the biggest sport event in the world.
It just so happens that Holland was also one of the countries up for bid that got rejected… though if memory serves it was in favor of Russia.
Yes, World Cup Qatar is a sad joke with a mix of politics and corruption to blame. None of the reasons make sense. They are a pitiful national team (lowest ever ranking to host, even worse than South Africa or the US when it hosted). More people signed a petition to bring the WC to the US (over 1 Mill) than there are citizens of Qatar (745k). The excuse of making money doesn’t make sense since the WC US in ‘94 brought in the most revenue ever.
Furthermore, the idea of promoting the sport in areas less involved is poppycock too. Yes, that was reasonable for the US (still not close to as popular a sport as the other American sports), but Qatar doesn’t even have a professional league. At least Australia does (and has some quality too… even has a reality show in Fox Soccer with kids competing for a spot on a real team). Furthermore, Brazil is the next WC. BRAZIL! Arguably the biggest footballing country in the world (between them, Argentina and England).
This is stupidity about politic-ing with the Middle Eastern countries while getting paid off to do so. The reality is any and every other country is and was a more viable choice than Qatar. If you don’t want to give it to the US because of a political issue, fine… give it to the Auzzies or some other deserving country. I for 1, will not be watching the games in Qatar and I watched 90% of them in South Africa.
There ought to be a rule that a country that has never qualified for a WC cannot bid to host.
I made a cartooon last summer about hte World cup. Beebee tells Buzz Canada doesn’t have a World cup team. Buzz then says “Too bad, I know a good goalie”. Next frame, we see Sooky/Cerberus in a Team Canada soccer shirt (number 666) in front of a soccer goal!

The next one is in Russia, in Europe-Asia. The one thereafter in Qatar, the Middle-East, Asia. The cartoonist is in the Netherlands, Europe.

The next World Cup is in Brazil in 2014. Then Russia in 2018. And Qatar in 2022, is a concern over security for a million visitors.
Brazil and Russia might also have security issues.
