This comic always founds a way to make me smile, it is nice to see a comic that explain in words that anyone can understand about being in the spectrum and that with a little of understanding and a lot of patience, everyone can get along with anyone.
While I like this, I guess the conundrum that is still unresolved and difficult is… should AJ then stop trying to befriend Kyle because the indications he receives are that Kyle does not want to interact with him… or should AJ keep trying to befriend Kyle in all sorts of different ways until he finds one that works? Neither option seems particularly satisfying because the first does not allow a friendship and the latter seems potentially very difficult to do and seems to make AJ put in a disproportionate amount of the effort for the potential friendship. It is a hard question to answer and think about.
ASD does have a very wide range of ways in which it manifests itself.
This is a different twist than I’d originally thought (hard of hearing, bullied, new school, etc.). I don’t personally know anyone who’s been diagnosed with ASD, but my instinct would be to approach him with a friendly smile and/or say HI and leave it at that. Just let him come to you when and if he’s comfortable doing so. Those of you who may know better please let me know if so.
