Shouldn’t the roles be reversed? I thought Alix was an admirer of nature and all forms of life. I would picture Holly as being the one who would be afraid of a spider. See today’s Stone Soup Classics for comparison:

Why not the girls have a nightlight in their bathroom? We have them. We also have spiders in the attic. Set spider traps.
