I used to work in a remedial math lab at a community college so got to work with all the students who hated/couldn’t do math. While helping an adult woman with some percentage problems she popped the “why do I need this” question. I asked if she had a job and she said yes. I said she could check that her pay was right. She said her employer took care of that. I asked if she knew if they did it right. She sat in silence for a minute or two and then went back to work on the problems.

I couldn’t work out why I needed maths at school but ended up using maths at uni and all the time at work.
