I have a much, much bigger box than that to pass along to my heirs.

I thought about that a few years back, but realized that, because our computer centered sons had reached official middle age they probably had whole rooms full of the same stuff.

Maybe we could send it into space where aliens could get all tangled up in trying to guess what goes where, and thus have less time to devote to taking over this truly mixed up planet

I have a whole drawer of connectors, cabling and adapters – most of which can still be used – I do suppose I could get rid of those serial port cables for the dot matrix printer I bought in 1992.

I have a 64 MB USB stick. I still use it only because I can. I use it to transfer photos to my picture frame (also more than a dozen years old).

Several years ago, I got rid of all my old floppy drives. That’s when I finally got rid of the last machine I had that could read them.

I also transferred my backup files of documents, pictures and software to USB sticks from CD. No telling how much longer they’ll be hanging around. My current backups are on an external hard drive: that should still work for a while. Cloud backup is the next step.

I relate. After decades of saving computers, peripherals, electronic parts and everything else deemed still “good”, it was time to employ a new storage rule. If I haven’t used it in the last 12 months or cannot use it in the next 12 months, it has to go! So now the donating and recycling is done. As for the rest of the stockpile, I’m too embarrassed to reveal the amount I paid to have it hauled away. But hey! It’s nice to park BOTH cars in the garage again.

My dad said this to me about his vinyl collection. I now have a large box full of albums and another of 45s wich could fit in my ipod nano, that’s about the size of a pack of cards, at least 10 times over. Isn’t technology wonderful.

Nice. We put a stack of pre-intel macs in the family room, covered them with a table cloth and use it as an end table. Unfortunately, that is just the tip of techburg.

I still have my large vinyl collection as well as three different record players for the 78, 45 and 33s (two of which also play cassette tapes). I still have my old analog AT&T bag phone – for a souvenir, maybe? I also have a large box of VHS tapes as well as three old VCRs for them (and my old Hollywood Video card). I’ll let my kids worry about that stuff if they want the actual valuable part of my inheritance.

    :-)
