The Pope really stepped in it this time, hell is their number one fundraiser. Well, fear of hell is anyway. Buying a stairway is so passe, there are elevators for sale now. (For a few hundred more: express)

People hate the fact that they made up all these rules to get to heaven and now find out there is no hell? It is like the old joke where St. Peter is giving a new entrant a tour. The new guy sees another hopping on one leg while the other leg is kicking him. New guy goes what the heck? St. Peter says that guy was a monk who practiced abstinence his whole life, only to find everyone goes to Heaven. Now he is kicking himself in the a** for all eternity!

Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try.

No hell below us. Above us only sky.

Hell is one of the more distressing parts of orthodox Christian belief. Can you really believe that a loving god would create a system that includes damnation? (Let alone all the horrible things that happen to innocent people while they are alive.)

Had an Italian student in Milan who told me….“religion is a moral brake”. He had a huge painting of Saint Sebastian stuck with arrows on his living room wall. Apparently, he was an art lover….

This whole thing is much ado about nothing. The article that made the statement is questionable. It’s author, an avowed militant atheist and well known anti-cleric, has a history of putting words in people’s mouths. He didn’t document their conversation in any way. He has already stated he could have made a mistake. And if he said anything, the Pope may have been referring to the idea of Hell as a lake of fire and brimstone. Which by the way isn’t part of Catholic doctrine. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/30/world/europe/pope-francis-hell-scalfari.html

Last I heard, the Free-Willers and the Predestinators were still all tied up in the 4th quarter. From a logical standpoint, you can have one or the other but not both.

If “God” foregives everyone, and Hell doesn’t exist, and everything is cool, why is the death penalty considered punishment? Then there’s the 72 virgins version of insanity.

Don’t take these “Pope’s words” for good : the article was wrote by the very old founder of “La Republica” that since some months hasn’t the brain connected with the mouth . During the last italian political election he changed three times his position about the future leadership : he simply misunderstood the Pope Frances’ words

Ah, yes; but it’s so much fun to believe the Pope said that and everything else we read on the Interwebs so we can scream in rage at all Liberals.

Reminds me of an old joke: Northern Baptist, “There Ain’t no hell”. Southern Baptist, “The Hell there Ain’t”.
