…To answer what was said about my yesterday comment about " the psedonoymous Olivia James… " It seemed odd to me, seeing McDonald and AV talking about the artist being a woman, but using a pen name. I’ve since seen the NY Times’ piece on the new Nancy, which again repeats that O. J. is a pen name, this time with more authority. Okay. Now, a transgender woman who has not had " down there " surgery is a woman in identity, and someone who has had surgery has moved biologically in that direction, in my belief. Now, I Don’t see why it’s so wonderful that MS. James jokes about tech – Tons of comic strips do jokes about tech these days! It is a running joke of mine, at my Facebook page – I’m Walter Lilly, in Santa Cruz, " Surf City ", CA – that I butch about daily strip artists who try to " get hip and with-it " by doing selfie and binge-watching jokes!

These strips are starting to get more tolerable in both content and color tone. Most importantly, they are way way better than the first two weeks.

This begs the question, since the editors see work roughly a month in advance, why the editors didn’t simply tell the artist to can the first two weeks’ of work, start the strip with Week Three, and come up with two more weeks of better work to round out the first month.

Relatedly, whoever hired the artist had to have made the decision based on at least two months’ worth of work, right? Otherwise, how would they know that a few initial good ideas were sustainable over the long run? So why would they not have said that this new direction was good but the first 12 strips were just too weak and needed to be eliminated, especially when you were looking for the best work possible to launch a new artist, direction, and feel.

Specific to today’s strip, I wonder why the word “and” in the final panel was underlined. First of all, it threw the bottom line down a bit so the balloon wording doesn’t feel like a cohesive five-line unit; and secondly, if the word were bold instead it would have added some visual non-monotony to the mix.

I like the new Nancy. These are actual gags, not cheesy attempts at pulling at heartstrings. None of the characters have had tears welt up in their eyes yet.

I appreciate watching our new artist’s development…making the actual strip a story within a story.

I said during the last presidential election that the two stupidest sets of voters were 1) those who voted for Hillary just because she was a woman; and 2) those who voted against Hillary just because she was a woman.

With a little tweaking, I can say the same thing about this comic. Can we dispense with the “woman” thing? If we truly believe in equality, we will address the comic on its own merits, regardless of the gender of the cartoonist.

It is fun watching the comic finding its niche. I think we are still a couple of months out until we can make any personal judgments on this comic.

The new girl is definitely not one of Bushmiller’s “glamor” girls that Nancy always despised. I think she was a stand-in for a “Peanuts” comic. Very new look.

A few weeks isn’t enough to give the new artist a chance. Sometimes it takes up to a year. Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know.

Here’s an update for those breathlessly waiting for the return of Ms. Ritz: Quoting Ms. Jaimes: “I was asked by my editors to hold off on using Fritzi for the first four weeks, since the last run ended with her getting married and she’s going to be single again in my run.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/23/arts/nancy-comic-strip-cartoonist-olivia-jaimes.html?smid=tw-nytimesarts&smtyp=cur

I love the gently updated look of the strip! It’s not nostalgic, which is great. The humor is kind of dumb in the great old way. I love the humor! I’ve read Nancy for 50 years, collected the strips, staged silly events celebrating Bushmiller, and I’m even acknowledged in “How to Read Nancy,” and this is the best thing to happen to Nancy since Bushmiller’s retirement. Thank God they found this woman to revive the strip!

I’d like to make a suggestion to the skeptical. I have both “Nancy Classics” by Bushmiller and “Nancy” saved on My Comics page, next to each other: try this! They appear very similar in style and tone. It is my opinion that OJ is channeling art and humor much more like Bushmiller than Gilchrist. So if you were a Gilchrist fan more than Bushmiller, you’re not likely to be an OJ fan.

I’ve seen many comments praising O.J.‘s for being so much like Bushmiller’s art. Folks, Bushmiller’s strips are in Nancy Classics. They are nothing alike.

Better but no prize. I repeat what I said before: 4-6 weeks is the test period. June 1 seems like a good “bailout or stay” date. Are you with me?
