The best time of my life was when I could stay home with my two sons. The neighborhood I lived in was all young poor married couples, but at 10:00 we brought the kids over to whoever’s house was that day’s turn and they played in the back yard while we drank coffee and ate cookies. Sometimes we stayed for lunch, but usually there was too much to do at home. I got a teaching job after we decided that being perpetually poor wasn’t going to work because the kids were going to have to go to college so we’d better go first so we could afford to send them. It was the right decision, but growing up wasn’t near as much fun as being irresponsible.
