Yes, unfortunately, the police every now and then do use psychics (oftentimes, the psychic just intrudes on the case for publicity), who never are any actual help, and in the 1950s, the US government was worried about a “psy-gap” with Russia and started wasting tax money on turning supposed psychics into psy-warriors. Clinton ended the program, but unfortunately, W brought it back.
