Mostly, this is slapstick shtick humor almost like a spit-take. I guess it’s a rolled eyelids take. Frazz echoes Costello here, “I’m a baaaaad boy!” These are cardboard characters whose deep psychological scarring is not relevant, although personality flaws and/or gaffes make the jokes funny. Example: Calvin’s antics without Calvin’s history and attitude would often just be minor cruelties. Frazz is just amusing and sometimes instructive. I don’t need much more from a comic strip..
