Luann has a good point. Nancy is being kind. Do most rallies amount to preaching to the choir?

@KENHENSE: There are a lot of activities that go on at Earth day event, not just speeches. Usually you can find ‘green vendors’, businesses that sell things like solar power systems, passive rainwater collectors and similar things. The Earth Day celebration in Casselberry Florida (which will be April 28) includes art exhibits by artists who use ‘found’ objects or who recycle discarded cans and bottles, and there will be explanations of how to better use fertilizer so it doesn’t contaminate surface water. As with a lot of these events, there will be seedling trees given to some who attend talks about taking care of Florida vegetation…

The popularity of Earth Day has dropped around Tucson where I live. They used to have a giant Festival in a park and a parade. This year it is just exhibits at the local Children’s Museum. I remember Disney used to release a documentary every Earth Day, but that appears to be gone too.

At least Luann is keeping the faith, while also putting a pretty good “hypocrite” label on marchers that hand out flyers and carry signs. That way you satisfy both sides.

Wow, Nancy, way to needlessly coddle your adult daughter. And good job on reinforcing the negative stereotype about environmentalists: that whether or not their actions actually make a difference is irrelevant to the person as long as they can pat themselves on the back for what they’re doing.

Just came back from the Asparagus Festival down in Stockton, Calif. They had battered, deep fried asparagus with grated Parmesan over the top, asparagus ice cream, asparagus burritos, and a few other things Mother Earth presented to us via her gift of asparagus. Beautiful day out here on the Left Coast!

Use recyclable materials for the signs and fliers, and use public transport.

A little foresight could have saved you a lot of soul-searching!

Nice Earth Day thought. This is really not a foible day panel, it is a message one.

What has happened to Luann’s womanly figure – always one of her major assets? She’s drawn here skinny and almost completely flat. Hope she isn’t becoming anorexic.

If there were 500 cars, each averaging 20 MPG, with engines not tuned, nobody car pools…There will be at least one trailer. The signs require petroleum to make, and fossil fuels to run the machines that make them. You’ve got a loss of trees, NOISE, and the garbage that these Eco-nuts leave behind. I’ve never seen an “Eco-nut” crowd clean up after itself. Parking is on a paved lot, which required petroleum and asphalt, cutting down trees, destroying vegetation, and all the oil and gas used by the machines. Traffic disruptions, slowing down traffic and making it less fuel efficient — With all that in mind, when they go home they turn on all the lights and the TV to see if the cameras caught them in the group.

    Doing more harm than good?

Actually, I think staying at home, planting a garden or just sleeping in a chair would be a far more appropriate way to celebrate Lenin’s B-Day…

And our obligatory nod to “Earth Day” is complete. Given her recent milieu, Luann could have made a “statement” by going nude to the rally. Think how much the Earth suffers from clothing manufacture. Not to mention makeup and jewelry. :o)

I guess this is somewhat of a slam against those celebrities and politicians who go to “green” conferences and rallies in their private jets and limousines. They then feel sanctimonious because they buy “green” credits to make up for their thoughtless selfishness.

I have to agree with those who say that the people who attend these rallies rarely clean up after themselves. They leave a huge mess behind and expect someone else to clean up for them.

Ah, but they feel good about themselves for “caring about the planet”. Hypocrites.

I bought a bottle of water yesterday because it was in a glass bottle. I never buy water, but if someone’s going to the expense of putting it into glass instead of plastic I’ll bloody well support them.

Hey she could have driven an electric car! Ooopppsss, those are the biggest ecological nightmare of all. No way to recycle all those li-Ion batteries, horrible transmission losses of electricity, burning fossil fuels to generate electricity, hydroelectric damns already negatively impacting the water, NYC estimates if half the city used an electric car, the city would have brownouts and blackouts at night where there isn’t as high a demand for electricity! Yep, love those electric cars.

What happened to hydrogen fuel cells? Emissions are water vapor. Break water down into hydrogen (fuel) and oxygen (hospitals, etc). Oh yeah, the oil companies don’t make any money and the foreign car companies are miles ahead of anything American is doing.

If you really want to live green, you’ll emulate Ed Begley Jr.

Dude rides his bicycle to rallies then points to the parking lot full of SUV’s and shames the crowd. Can’t say I agree with him, but the man practices what he preaches.

The only thing is: shaming clueless Americans is so easy it’s not fun.

Most Americans seem to mistake opinions for thoughts. Lots of the former, and none of the latter.

Earth Day…started by aging hippie Ira Einhorn who killed his girlfriend and left her body in a trunk in his closet. Then he fled overseas and decades later, when the law caught up with him, he played the crazy card and pretended to slash his own throat.

Perhaps Luann and Tara should do the Wotld Naked Bike Ride, a protest against dependency on fossil fuels, advocacy for cycling safety and infrastructure, and body acceptance. Doubt Luann would fully participate, but it’s bare as you dare.

Contrary to Nancy’s attempted consolation, I think Luann’s doubts are justified….
