I’d just wait until Holly gets home – and crush her then.

Teacher’s jobs are to teach the kids while they are in school. Homework is invasive on a childs personal time when he should be swinging on a vine down by the creek.

frjsr Holly not lied but she is also being sneaky. I wonder if she is not only going to the mall but to meet her special guy who she wants as a boyfriend.
Sorry to let some of you know and now age will be definitely get me. I don’t think an Associates degree or tech college will get the job, employers want work experience yes but either a Bachelor’s or Masters degree for a small job. With so much much high employment.

OK, yeah, like we’re not ALREADY far enough behind Europe and Asia? Some kids pick up everything they need in the classroom, and homework is superfluous. Some kids don’t pay any more attention in the classroom than they absolutely HAVE to, and with one teacher for 40 kids it’s easy to escape unnoticed. Teachers have to slow everything down to hammer an education (or at least try to) into the heads of those who don’t want one, making it more mind-numbing for those who are keeping up or even working in advance of their age-group.
Children learn best when they value education, and when the PARENTS value the education. An education that begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:00 PM isn’t going to cut it, and when the report cards come in and the parents see nothing but C’s, D’s, and F’s it’s ridiculous to complain that the teachers aren’t holding up THEIR end of the deal.
I understand that 4 hours of homework per night is excessive, but if time-consuming activities such as reading the textbooks and doing a couple of pages of worksheets are budgeted for out-of-classroom time, then time IN the classroom may be more profitably spent on comprehension.

So how exactly is Holly getting to the mall? She’s too young to drive and too lazy to walk!

Plus, the kids aren’t going to be swinging on a vine down by the creek. They’re going to be in a zombie state in front of the the TV, the playstation, or the internet.

Val should probably have waited until she got home from work to deal with Holly’s behavior. I can’t believe most bosses would let their employees go home every time they had a discipline problem with one of their kids, at least not at the places I’ve worked. Especially in this economy. Yes Holly did wrong and needs discipline, but not immediately if her mom is in the middle of her work day.
I agree with fbjsr–the issue is that Holly lied to her grandma, and went to the mall without permission.
