When I was a kid, I was annoyed that we never actually saw the caterpillar and had to take the characters’ word for it.
Nowadays, I think that makes it funnier.

Some larva are in fact good to eat, even raw & living, although it’s perhaps an acquired taste. OTOH, Calvin had better hope that spiky caterpillar isn’t a saddleback or a puss caterpillar or some such.
