What if her aide is just doing to her what she used to do to Mao? Lie about it being done and hope she changes her mind?

How did Honey get such a position? She was wanted by the Chinese government after Tiananmen Square, and escaped to the USA where she apparently became a citizen.

Whatever happened to California’s high speed rail project? Do they need some extra autocracy? Maybe CA should take the first step and become a one-party state.

And THAT’S what happens when you have someone who actually knows what’s going on in charge, unlike The Dumpsterfire, who lives in his fantasy world where HE’s actually smart.

We’ll never manage to get things done as long as we insist on letting contractors run the work for us. Get the Army Corps of Engineers and the Sea Bees involved and we’d have high speed rail from coast to coast in time for 2020.

Actually, I’m perfectly fine with not adding more lanes to superhighways. We need to drive less, not more. As for the other items, since our autocracy operates on the principle of funneling all wealth to a tiny number of rich people, subways and high-speed rail are only on the table if they can be massively overpriced.

Autocracy might be able to overlook the number of homes and businesses that would need to be bulldozed to add four lanes to even a middling country road over there. Over here, we have lawyers: one of the few bulwarks left against unchecked government and commercial power. (No wonder our would-be autocrats hate other people’s lawyers so much.)

Yes, trump has tried the autocratic maneuver and continues to try it. The White House counsel got in his way big time a few months ago when trump wanted to fire Mueller. Fortunately, we still have some checks and balances, even with the GOP controlling the House and Senate as well as the White House.

I rode high speed rail in France and Britain in 1984, it was great.

As I recall that Ayn Rand book was about making a high speed rail, Republicans hate that idea.

If all you recall is high speed rail, you may want to re-read it. The business principles which allowed the railroad’s success would have been embraced by Republicans.

Actually, they are “trying” to establish an “Autocracy” even as we speak, but are proving as inept at THAT as they have proven themselves in every endeavour they’ve attempted – the ONLY thing at which they’ve proven exceptional at is DESTRUCTION – at which EVERY child excels!

A quibble which I bet most people didn’t note… Most of the dialog in today’s strip should have been in parentheses, because it is in Chinese, not English.
