No more ‘funny’ than non-Christians going to the movies on Christmas Day. They’re holidays, not shaming rituals.

Well, go skiing with your glasses off long enough and you’ll be colourblind permanently.

Adds an irony to the fact that my season pass is “blacked” out this weekend.

Sigh. My tiny town is 6 blocks long and those #%# skiers fly through at 60 rather than 25.

MLK is great as a federal holiday, but on a state level the kids would be better off in school learning about Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era.

And some are still brain dead, repeating those old worn out racist, bigoted comments.

Where I worked we had two Betty’s who would bring in cakes at times. I was telling some others about the good piece of cake I had from one of them. When asked from whom, I replied I didn’t know their last names. Another gal piped up, “The white Betty or the black Betty?” I had never thought of them in that way.

The Soviets had eight national holidays, one was to honor women. The Russian state has nine. The majority of them are war and liberation related. Then 1 day for Xmas.

As you can see from my little picture I am a alpine skier. But I often find that being born white/male/and a recovering professional freestyle skier make me a target again. Today I’m just short of 66 years old still a white male, progressive, college professor, Eagle Scout, father of two wonderful men who are adding positively to the world but because of a warped reality of our current leader and his gang of alt-right wackos I’m getting painted with the same ugly brush. So skiing is the issue?

In a way its fitting that people are treating Martin Luther King day the same way they do Memorial day. Both holidays are about heroes who died for their country.

I don’t get this at all. Why is it bad to ski on MLK Day? Because you’re surrounded by whiteness?

Color blind? I wish. Pluralism training attempted to teach me that being color blind was not possible, you had to consider it anytime you interacted with anyone.

Anybody see the speech the President gave Friday? He very carefully read from the script and, in this case, didn’t go offscript at all.

Not colorblind, accepting of all colors of the rainbow which is what the rainbow flag means, not just Gays which has a pink triangle added. Everyone is allowed even Nazis but they must behave. All colors, shapes, creeds accepted. Or at least tolerated.

I wonder if I’ll get a little flak for venturing into racial and social issues today. Maybe. And that’s OK. I’m not venturing far.

There was a movie in the ‘80s called “Under Fire,” where Nick Note played a photojournalist who specialized in war and combat zones. I remember it as a pretty good movie with a pretty great line, when Nolte’s character said, “I don’t take sides, I take pictures.” Me? I don’t look for trouble, I look for funny. And incongruity is funny. So it’s kind of funny that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a big weekend for what is, by any observation I’ve been able to make, one of the whitest recreational pursuits outside … oh, hell, triathlon, if I may spare anyone the bother of pointing it out. To be fair, I don’t get the impression ski resorts or triathlons are trying to keep other cultures out. Other cultures might simply be a good deal smarter with their money.

So if someone thinks I’m getting overly strident, that’s not what’s happening today. Today I’m mostly in it for the wordplay. And if someone wants to get offended by that, okay, they may have a point.

Speaking of “Irony Mountain” -some years the USPS celebrates MK Day on Jan. 19 – the actual birthday of Robert E. Lee .

If you think skiing on MLK’s B’day is bad, how about the areas that have no snow? What happens there? The local merchants have a “White Sale” of course! No better time to pick up on some new SHEETS and save a few bucks while you’re at it!
