Caulfield still has to learn about making excuses to imbibe.

Can’t remember which culture (Polynesian?) says that you turn your back to the future and face the past, because you know the past and see it while you don’t see the future.

I like to remind myself that repetition is a great teacher. But I use it to learn and improve.

Looking back probably doesn’t help much with the future. As someone said, ‘you can’t sail your ship on yesterday’s wind.’ Of course, that doesn’t apply to pols. They supply their own wind.

If I learn how to do a job better, I had darned well better keep doing it.

The Roman god Janus, patron of doorways, had 2 faces, probably because he didn’t want anyone sneaking up on him from behind.

Looking back to learn from the past is a good idea, not a goal of the future to go to the past. Some have it that way. The year may be new, but the slate is hardly clean.

So, I was backing my car into the garage after a long, tiring, kind of stressful day and did something I’ve never done before: I clipped the rear-view mirror on the edge of the garage doorway. I was so irritated at letting my bad day spill over into a dumb, distracted mistake that I immediately made another one. I pulled the car not quite the rest of the way in, leaving the bumper just where it wouldn’t trigger the automatic door shutoff, but where the door could still come down on the bumper, try to keep going, and fold itself into scrap-metal origami.

Anyway, that’s what I did over the weekend before running a strip with Caulfield asking, “Why look back?”.
