How would she know? You don’t buy water heaters on a “schedule”, you maintain and flush it periodically, but essentially you wait until you see the leak.
There is no such thing as “have to buy a new water heater soon.” There is “the water heater is fine,” and then “have to buy a new water heater now,” that’s all.
There are actually lots of clues that a new water heater will be needed soon—like taking an extra long time for water to heat, etc. Also if it has been a very long time since it was replaced, or maybe never, its days are probably numbered. It’s probably something they have talked about and she is just reminding him that it will need to be done sooner or later. Besides, water heaters don’t cost that much, and it’s never been made obvious that they were strapped for cash.
We had to get the thermocouple on our hot water heater replaced recently. The plumber said that that brand is infamous and that we’ll probably have to do it again in two-three years but no sense in replacing the whole thing yet. New models (from better manufacturers) don’t use thermocouples anymore, look for one that doesn’t. Anyway, he got it going quickly and the charge was very reasonable.

Well, a water heater for a Christmas present is pretty lame. Arlo had the better idea.

A water heater is not a Christmas present, it’s a household expense/necessity.
