The last candidate to run and lose twice was Adlai Stevenson in the 1950’s. Shots at the White House are too valuable to waste on failed candidates. Although Clay may indeed have failed three times, he deserves better than being called a “three time loser.” Good for you noting that West Virginia doesn’t exist yet.
One good look at a U.S. Road Atlas will show that there are plenty of stories to tell; I live in a Kentucky town called “Clay”, it’s about 35 miles west of a town named ‘Calhoun, KY’, and is about 25 miles northwest of a town named ‘Madisonville, KY’. One cannot watch the local high school sports report without catching a named reference to the people described by Brian in this marvelous series…..
