Just to be pedantic, but technically he wouldn´t be if he defines himself illigal to begin with. Also didn´t his parents come because they thought conditions would be better for them there?
Oh, well, as long as everyone else has staked out a hard line, I’ll join in: I say, let ‘em in! If they’re here, give them amnesty, make them citizens. Shift all the money you’re throwing at harassing, deporting, and raids to strengthening the border and minimizing future illegal immigration.
I know this is probably the least popular view ever, but I say make them all legal, then move all that money and law enforcement effort into controlling future immigration.
This is rhetorical, since I’m sure I know the answer the “send ’em all back” crowd will give but…Do you really think it’s just and fair to deport a married couple who have lived, worked, and paid taxes in this country for 30 years just because they are undocumented immigrants ?
The tRUMP administration did precisely that, this week ! And broke up the family because the couples three children, being U.S. born, will remain there !
Well, I came to remove Baldo from my page because it is becoming political- I don’t read comics for politics unless they are overtly political. But after reading the comments i’ll stick around and see how this plays out.
Since nobody has mentioned this, I will remind you that as per DHS stats, the number of apprehensions of people crossing illegally is at its lowest in decades. A lot lower than it was even a few years ago and WAY lower than the peaks of the mid to late 90s.
Also, as a RETIRED Border Patrol Agent of 23 years, I can speak to this. Those pinheads that just scream send them back or have the hatred in their hearts, etc, are all myopically foolish. I’ve been on the lines and seen things that would freak you out. It’s a VERY tough world out there and the stories one hears from people who have sacrificed almost everything to get here would make you week or vomit.
The DREAMers are raised here and now nothing of what life is like anywhere else. To send them back is cruel. I have seen people being sent back after having grown up here and they were terrified beyond description. Do not forget, not nearly all “Illegal aliens” (More correctly, non-citizens who have entered the US without inspection), are from Mexico as som e idiots here seem to think.
They are of all colors, creeds, etc. Most are honest and want to work and exist and many wish to support their families back home, wherever that is. Many even hope to return.
Try to be open minded people, and empathetic. There is a big world out there. Do not hold hatred and resentment in your hearts.
Lots of repeat posts from people saying the same angry things from earlier this week. Never forget folks, while we can all identify with Cruz, ‘Baldo’ is a fictional comic strip, presented to tell one side of a story. Some of that is bias by Hector and Carlos, but mostly it’s because comics really can never address a really deep or serious issue.
There are many people hurt on BOTH sides of this issue. There are people victimized by having their identity stolen by illegals, people whose property was stolen by illegals as they passed through their homes, some people even murdered by illegals (the tragic case in California is far from unusual, sadly). There are also millions of people who just want to live and work in peace, but are essentially victims of circumstance and some bad choices they are finding hard to fix now.
Everyone will make up their own mind. People open to other possibilities will be swayed by reason, not insults, profanity or idiotic stereotypes. In the end, the only way to move forward is with respect for opinions besides your own, but that’s unfortunately why so many people cannot move forward.
As has been mentioned above, this a far too complex subject to resolve in the comic strip itself. Wanting to escape a bad situation is normal and good. Breaking the law to enter the country is bad, no matter your intentions. While America cannot handle the tens of millions that would want to move here from their home countries, we should have enough heart to allow some. Determining how many and from where is the hard part. One more factor that seems not to have been mentioned yet by other posters: the graying of America. Part of the reason the U.S. economics are anemic, is that the baby boomers are past the age where they are consuming, and are in a saving and conserving mode. That doesn’t help our economy grow. Would young, immigrant families like Cruz’s help with the demographics?
